How on earth do you get rid of thrush??
Question: This has been driving me mad for about a year.
I've been to the doctor's and sexual health clinics many times, but they never find anything serious, thank God, they just diagnose the same thing and send me away with Canesten everytime, but it always comes back.
I'm careful not to wear tight-fitting jeans or use perfumed soaps and follow all that advice but it always comes back.
I'm at my wit's end!
Answers: do u just use the pessaries & external cream, or have u ever tried taking the tablets ? i had some problems with thrush after having my baby a couple of years ago, and i found that the pessaries & cream soothed it for a while, but the problem kept returning. i found that taking the tablet that u can buy from a chemist (pharmacy, if u are from the USA !), works a lot better. in the uk, Canesten do a tablet. failing that, i would try to do some research on the internet if i were u. i've had a brief look, and there are websites that mention long term medication, usually anti biotics, to treat re occuring problems with thrush.
yoghurt...seriously
Avoid wheat and sugar!!!!!!! Its a yeast and feeds on the stuff!!!
Have you been checked for Candida?
Express your frustration with your physician and if necessary, get another opinion. Also, do your research. You may be surprised what you find on WebMD or other sites.
Good Luck!
Thrush is an oral fungus.
Small amounts of the candida fungus are present in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin of most healthy people and are normally kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms in the body. However, certain illnesses, stress, or medications can disturb the delicate balance, causing the fungus candida to grow out of control, causing infection.
Medications that upset the balance of microorganisms in the mouth and may cause thrush include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and birth control pills. Illnesses or medical situations that make candida infection more likely to develop include uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, cancer, dry mouth, or pregnancy (caused by the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy). People who smoke or wear dentures that don't fit properly also are at increased risk for thrush.
While healthy children and adults can be effectively treated, the symptoms my be more server and difficult to manage in those with weakened immune systems. Antifungal medications, which are generally taken for 10 to 14 days, are often prescribed to treat thrush. These medicines are available in tablets, lozenges, or liquids. Your dentist will have a specific treatment approach designed for you based on your age and the cause of the infection. Because the presence of candida infection can be a symptom of other medical problems, your dentist may suggest you seek care from a medical doctor as well so that any underlying health problems you may have can be treated.
Canesten is for other body part infections. You may have jock itch or a yeast infection...
Fungal infection:
Two of the most common fungal skin infections are athlete's foot and sweat rash.
Sweat rash is caused by candida, a yeast-like fungus that usually lives harmlessly on our skin. However, the natural balance that normally keeps this fungus under control can be upset by factors such as sweating, tight or synthetic clothing and cosmetic preparations such as bath additives. When levels of the yeast increase, the skin can develop the following symptoms: persistent burning and itching, soreness, a variety of red patches or blemishes as well as a softened and soggy appearance.
Sweat rash can appear anywhere on the body, but is more likely to occur where folds of skin rub against each other, such as: under the breasts, under arms, around the groin and also on the back.
Athlete's foot is caused by another sort of fungus that usually lives harmlessly on our skin and in our environment. The natural balance that normally keeps this fungus under control can be upset by factors such as damp moist conditions. This could happen, for example, through regularly wearing training shoes that keep the feet hot and sweaty.
Under these circumstances the fungus can become troublesome and the following symptoms may develop:
itching or burning sensation
redness between the toes
left untreated this may develop into cracked and the flaking skin between the toes, or on the soles of the feet.
What does Canesten Hydrocortisone contain?
The cream contains 1% of the active ingredients Clotrimazole Ph.Eur. and hydrocortisone Ph.Eur.
It also contains benzyl alcohol, cetyl stearyl alcohol, hostaphosphate KW solid, myritol 318 and purified water.
The cream comes in a tube containing 15g.
Clotrimazole is one of a group of medicines called imidazole antifungals, which are used to treat fungal skin infections.
Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid, which reduces swelling, redness and itching associated with inflammation of the skin.
When should I use Canesten Hydrocortisone?
The cream can be used to treat athlete's foot and fungal sweat rash when there are additional symptoms of inflammation (such as swelling, redness and itching).
If you are unsure whether you have either of these conditions, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
When should I not Canesten Hydrocortisone?
If you have a fungal infection without specific symptoms of inflammation, an antifungal medicine without hydrocortisone may be more appropriate.
There are a number of circumstances in which you should not use Canesten Hydrocortisone:
on areas of broken skin.
on large areas of skin.
for longer than 7 days.
if you have previously had a reaction to any of the ingredients in Canesten Hydrocortisone.
to treat a cold sore or acne.
on your face, eyes, mouth or mucous membranes.
Also, unless it has been prescribed by a doctor, you should not use Canesten Hydrocortisone:
in children under 10 years.
If you are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying for a baby.
in the vagina or on the vulva.
on the penis or scrotum.
around the anus.
on ringworm.
on areas of skin affected by eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis.
If you are unsure about any of these restrictions speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
What special precautions should I take?
Apply Canesten Hydrocortisone to the affected area only and avoid contact with surrounding skin.
Do not cover the area being treated with a dressing or bandage.
As with all products containing hydrocortisone you should wash your hands after applying the cream.
Canesten Hydrocortisone is for external use only and should not be put in the mouth or swallowed.
If it is swallowed accidentally, seek medical advice immediately. If you accidentally get cream in your eyes or mouth, wash immediately with water and contact your doctor.
How do I use Canesten Hydrocortisone?
Before use, pierce the tube seal by inverting the cap over the end of the tube and press.
A small amount of cream should be applied thinly and evenly to the affected area twice daily and rubbed in gently.
Treatment should be continued for up to 7 days.
If your symptoms persist consult your doctor.
You can help the treatment to work if you follow these simple self-help tips:
Although the infected area will itch, try not to scratch. Scratching will damage the surface of the skin and may cause the infection to spread further.
Keep affected skin areas clean and dry, but avoid excessive rubbing.
Do not share towels/bath mats etc. with other people as you could spread the infection to them.
Always wash your hands after treating the infection to prevent it spreading.
If you have athlete's foot:
Remember to dry the skin between the toes thoroughly.
Wash your socks, stockings or tights thoroughly in hot water to remove any shed skin or fungal spores.
Change your footwear daily if possible
What should I do if I forget to use the Canesten Hydrocortisone?
Apply the cream as soon as possible and then continue the rest of your treatment as directed.
What side effects may I experience?
As with other medicines, Canesten Hydrocortisone may cause side-effects in some people. You may experience a mild burning or irritation immediately after applying the cream. If this intolerable, stop treatment and ask your doctor for advice.
If you experience a rash, swelling or the itching worsens soon after you start using Canesten Hydrocortisone, stop using it and tell your doctor immediately as you may be allergic to this product.
If your symptoms get worse or persist, or you feel you are reacting badly to this medicine in any other way, consult your doctor.
How should I store Canesten Hydrocortisone?
The cream should be stored in a cool dry place.
Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not use the cream after the expiry date which is printed on the end of the carton and on the end of the tube.
If you find that you still have this medicine after its expiry date, return it to your pharmacist, who will dispose of it properly.
Remember:
If you have any doubts about using Canesten Hydrocortisone correctly, ask your pharmacist for advice.
Have you tried altering your diet? You could have some sort of food intolerance and causing the yeast imbalance. You should maybe go to see a nutritionist or do some research on the Internet.
