Is it smart to buy over-the-counter contacts or should you wait until doctor-prescribed??

Question: I think I like Acuvue Oasis For Astigmatism but do they have contact lenses in different color irises? If not, wat brand does? And where can I get them at? I know my friend once got these fiery-gold color Iris contacts.
Answers: Poor fitting contacts can damage your eye. Also, if you have not been instructed in the proper care and cleaning of the contacts, you can get nasty eye infections that can be quite serious.

Non prescription (over the counter) contacts are illegal in my state for those very reasons. You should see a licensed eye doctor.
Never. Contact lenses that people buy on their own without the guidance of an eye care professional can be very bad, and it is against the Law. Case in point: A doctor friend of mind keeps a copy of this true story in his waiting area- A young girl bought black market contacts (flea market, beauty supply, etc) without any consultation of an eye doctor- and because the contacts were a bad fit, this girl lost one eye and almost WENT BLIND in the other. Contacts have to be correctly fitted as well as the determination whether or not you would be a good candidate for contacts.
As for color toric (astigmatism) Vistakon (Oasys manufacturer) does not make a color toric lens. You would have to try Cibavision's Freshlook Colorblends Toric contacts (disposable, 53.96/box) or a regular dailywear color toric pair would be anywhere from $260-$340 depending on whether of not they were extended wear.
You can't get prescription contacts without a dr's prescription. Unless you're talking about plain ones for just color. I've read horror stories about people going blind from eye infections due to unregulated OTC contacts that people buy from gas stations and whatever, just to change their eye color.

In my state, you can only get contacts from a licensed eye doctor. At Walmart, you can buy prescription contacts in their eye center, but the doctor has to sell them to you. Even if they have your prescription on file, the clerk can't sell them to you.
I am not sure if Acuvue has colored lenses for people with astigmatism. Freshlook does offer toric lenses with colors though, for astigmatism.

It's not a good idea to get contacts without a doctor's prescription. Contacts are considered medical devices, so anywhere that sells to someone without a scrip is doing so illegally. You need to know your pupil size when ordering contacts, because if you get the wrong size it can cause major discomfort, eye infections, or worse. Wait until your eye doctor has seen you, and done your eye exam. He'll give you a prescription then, and you can order your contacts online or at his office. I prefer to order online; they are much cheaper online than at the eye doctor's office. A prescription is usually good for one year, then you will need to go back for another eye exam, to have your eyes checked again, and either have your prescription renewed, or get a new one if your vision has changed.

Sure of your prescription strenghth? Go ahead. But if it's been a while since you've seen the Doc... wait til you see them.
