Can EFFEXOR XR lead to Bipolar symptoms??

Question: I was on EFFEXOR XR for my depression for a while when I noticed increased hyper-activity and inability to concentrate. I was later diagnosed as Bipolar and now I'm on a lamictal to counter-act the high from the EFFEXOR XR. I was wondering is it possible that the high I began to experience was from the EFFEXOR as opossed to being bipolar? I had been treated for years before the bipolar diagnosis and never was diagnosed prior w/ bipolarity.
Answers: It would only make you manic if you already had bipolar in the first place. it can not cause bipolar but can trigger a manic episode.

An antidepressant will cause someone to go into a mania if the person is truly bipolar. I am bipolar and to am on limictal. My mom takes Effexor and she is bipolar. I have never heard of a medication causing bipolar, maybe bipolar symptoms but not bipolar.
Hi,

The Effexor XR had nothing to do with contributing to Bipolar disorder. This is something that was already lurking inside. I know this may sound crazy, but if it was a good thing they found that Effexor was not for you. I started taking Effexor myself about 5 years ago...I gave it about 2 weeks, before I flushed all that medication down the toilet. I too felt really high, and not myself...my doctor tried putting me on something else for anxiety/panic..but I am doing fine without anything. Well he does give me something. Which helps alot. Effexor makes everyone in the beginning feel out of whack. I hate that medication and have alot of friends who have taken it, some like it, but the majority hated it.

Good luck and get better.
Most people are bipolar for many years before being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with major depression for almost 20 years before being diagnosed as Bipolar II. I see now as I look back at my life that I was bipolar for several years prior. The symptoms progressed to more serious as I aged.

It got to a point where I knew that some of the things I was doing were not something I would ever do. I couldn't understand why I was doing them. I felt like I lost me somewhere.

I went and took several tests & that's when I was diagnosed as Bipolar II. I take Effexor, Lamictal & Wellbutrin. I had the Wellbutrin added temporarily for Seasonal Affective Disorder (the winter blues).

Since your diagnosis & being on new medications have you noticed that you feel better and have others noticed a positive change in you? If so, you should continue on your medication.

You could join a bipolar group in your area. You should check on www.meetup.com. Going to group made coming to terms with being bipolar much easier. It was amazing hearing so many people describe their lives & how much they sounded like mine.
Effexor works for me to balance my daily schedule, and the way I communicate with friends/ Family going pleasantly with the flow.

To start on it, yes you will feel sick because the medication is altering your mental and physical state of thinking. The nausea will disperse within 5 days, or take a gravol to control the nausea until you are stable.

Everyone is different when on a certain anti-depressant, only find one that you can settle down with and live your life at large.

I have not heard that Effexor can cause signs of Bi-polar, feel free to research more around and see what results you can find.
