How do I go about getting a diagnosis for Asperger's Syndrome??

Question: I live in the United Kingdom (UK), think that I have Asperger's Syndrome, and have thought so for a little while.
However, I'm unsure of the best way to get a diagnosis. I've been told to go to see my General Practitioner (GP) and ask for a referral to see a Psychiatrist, but when I mentioned it to him, he said that I sound like I don't have it.
We only spoke about it for six minutes, and I don't want to go on what he said, alone.
Answers: You have to get a referral for a psychiatrist and let that person get to know you for at least a year, and continue with them for longer than a year. That is the best way to get treatment for anything comorbid with it, such as depression. Mine knew immediately but wouldn't diagnose it till I said I think it too. Not every psychiatrist is the same. Tell someone in the medical field who you trust to refer you to someone good what you are like, what you go through, and they will give a more helpful referral. I got lucky.

Of course it helps to have lots of evidence from your past and also to know why your family didn't get it diagnosed when you were younger.
So I assume you don't really have any signs of autism -- I find it difficult to believe that you weren't diagnosed as a child!

Find another doctor and keep trying.

Keep asking!
A GP is nothing you need to contact a mental health specialist.
Women with aspergers don't usually have as profound social problems as do male aspies. You can check out the wikipedia article on AS. Its the best I've seen. If it reads like your diary, then you might have it.

If you want, you can email me with the symptoms you think you have and I'll tell you if it sounds aspie-like or not. I can't make a concrete diagnosis, but I can probably tell you if you are barking up the wrong tree.
Well, consult a therapist. He/She can refer you to a psychiatrist.
You might want to pick up a book and see if you have any characteristics of AS. There are books about AS everywhere these days, it shouldn't be hard to find one.
Tell me why you think that you suffer from AS? Edit your question and add details. Or email me click om my picture and you can message me
