Stages of dementia, recognition by police officers??
Question: I am seeking training materials for a law enforcement seminar on recognizing and dealing with the various forms of dementia. Any personal experiences, good or bad, in this arena would be appreciated. Also any refernce materials relevant ot this subject.
Answers: That's ambitious. Start with your local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
However, police officers aren't medical personal, and many things LOOK like dementia. It may be better to teach the officers how to treat a person with known dementia rather than how to recognize it. My dad has Alzheimer's and both times he ran away the cops were wonderful with him.
It's not up to the police to recognize the stages of dementia. No matter what disease or condition a person has that may make them a danger to themselves or others, will get them a free ride to the nearest mental health facility. We had one person in my district who walked away from his home at least 4 times a week. This was years ago before the term Alzheimer's came about. We did finally learn to contact the family. They were the negligent ones by not having someone stay with him or putting him in a nursing facility so he would be safe. It didn't matter what stage he was in. He was a danger to himself.
