What it like getting gas anesthesia??

Answers: Most of the time the induction is done with an IV agent and then you are intubated and given a gas anesthetic. You can be gassed down. I personally don't care for it. I found it to feel like I was being smothered. I'll take the IV sedation first every time.
We rarely put people to sleep with gas unless they are under the age of 8. It's quicker and safer to use IV medications.

However, after they are asleep, most people are kept asleep with gas. It's very easy to adjust the depth of anesthesia with gas, and the newer ones allow you to wake up pretty quickly.

You might taste the gas when you first wake up. Some people are nauseated afterward. (If you are prone to motion sickness, tell your anesthesiologist and you'll get some IV medication to help prevent it).

Other than that, you'll be unconscious for the duration of the procedure. We also give you pain medication while you are asleep, so you can wake up (fingers crossed) comfortably.
Agree with tonalc re nitrous oxide.

I just had surgery. They give you some medicine in IV to make you calm & keep you hydrated.

Then, they put a mask over your nose & mouth...I breathed in And next I knew I was in the recovery room. They do put a tracheal tube in but you're not aware of it while it's in.

Your throat will be dry & maybe a bit sore where tube was...but nothing bad. If you're having abdominal surgery you'll feel gassy afterwards because they fill you up with carbon dioxide so they can see the organs. You're asleep for that too.
You mean for complete sedation? You breathe in, you feel woozy, and then you wake up.

If you mean nitrous oxide, it's like being extremely stoned; for me it's almost psychedelic.
My boyfriend had to get it, he said it's no bad. He said you breath it in and then you start counting and you are out before you know it.
i've had about 9 surgeries my whole life time. i just had one last year and i recieved gas anestitia[spelling?]. all that happens is you breath it in, if one of the surgeons talks to you it sounds like it does when you plug one ear and someones talking to you, and u get a tad dizzy, but your out before you know it. its no big deal.
