Is a kerosene odor harmful??

Question: I recently purchased a fabric wall hanging, and there are no refunds. The hanging smells a bit like kerosene when you put your nose up to it. I wonder if this odor is harmful to my health? I can only smell it really from very close.
Answers: The odor is probably from the processing of the material used to make your wallhanging! This odor is often the case as well with jute and burlap materials as well! I would not be overtly concerned about it,and the odor will fade in due time. It is not much different than a brand new car,we are all familiar with that new car odor...and eventually that too will fade with time and use! The very fact that you really have to put your nose to it,in order to get even a whiff of the odor...suggests that the odor is not really overwhelming! Sniffing fresh vinyl won't hurt you neither. I don't feel that you should have any concerns about your wallhanging,it is no more harmful than a fresh painted wall that has dried...and that will fade in time also! Don't let the Hypochondriacs scare you too much, they tend to think that any odor means environmental hazard! thx. theerrander
Yes. Stop doing that.

If your room is well ventilated there should be no health hazard, but fumes of any kind are not good to breathe (i.e. paint, gasoline, etc.).
A number of fabrics are treated with formaldehyde, are you certain it is kerosene?
