How long can a person live with one lung??

Question: my mother in law went to the hospital with a collapsed lung. how long can she live without it?why if it is collapsed dont they have her on life support? she gets shots in here back and chest for scoliosis, could one of the shots caused her lung to collapse?
Answers: they don't have here on life support because a collapsed lung, while not very nice, is not life threatening. we all have two lungs and your mother in law can get enough oxygen into her body just using one of them while the other one heals. back in the days before antibiotics, removal of the affected lung was a standard method of treatment for tuberculosis, and sometimes it is still done now. people who had been subjected to that kind of surgery and survived the actual tb went on to live productive lives that weren't shortened by the surgery. a great aunt of mine had had a lung removed when she was in her thirties and lived into her mid-eighties, had three children with the one lung and all. the only way it affected her was that in crowded rooms she preferred to sit near a window or door so she could get the freshest air and breathe more easily. your mother in law will be just fine, don't worry! :-)
the hospital can re-inflate her lung.
she can live a long time with just one lung don't worry

my lung collapsed twice in lifeflight on the way to the hospital following a wreck in June of '05 I was told that each time it collapsed i flatlined shortly thereafter and was brought back... i had a slew of other injuries so i'm sure they came into play but my guess would be.... not long!
A lung is collapsed when the pleura- a two-ply membrane that both encloses the lung and lines the chest cavity- fills with fluid. The procedure is to drain the fluid allowing it to expand again. A person can live on one lung. Getting a lung removed is not uncommon with lung cancer patients.
