Scoliosis surgery??

Question: Does anyone that has scoliosis ever considered or had surgery for it? If you have how was the outcome?
Answers: I wrote all about my scoliosis surgeries in my blog. I had them in high school. I'm now 30 years old and have never felt better.

Have a read.
(Sorry about the length of the post!)

I had scoliosis. 110 degrees, extremely severe. I had an anterior release and a spinal fusion. It took 3 weeks in the hospital, and 2 months at home recovering. I went back to school, and it took a year before I got a full clearance to lift heavy weights and everything like normal.

Because I had such a severe case of scoliosis, my back is still curved about 15-20 degrees, but not enough to be really noticeable. The majority of patients will get a full recovery.

If you're worried about bending, don't be. Even having rods down my entire back and I can still bend just fine. I can't quite touch my toes (like in an upside down U), but I can do most other bending.just fine, and like I said, if your curve isn't as bad as mine you'll have better results still.

As far as pain goes, they gave me spinal morphine which last about a day (although it was only prescribed to last about 8 hours), and then it was IV morphine for the rest of the time.

After the anterior release (first surgery) I did 2 weeks of traction. In traction, they bolt you at your head and your neck, sandwich you between 2 beds, and then put weights on each end of you...and you're rotated every once in a while (for me, it was every 4 hours). It may sound painful, but it really isn't with the morphine, and it helps you gain height. I gained 4 1/2 inches, so after the surgery I was 2 inches taller than before!

After the surgery and recovery when I was sent home, they gave me codeine, but I never actually needed more than a couple regular-strength tylenol's for the first couple of days. Your mileage may vary =)

I'm now a year done, and my scar is just a pink line down my back. The chest tube scar is the same, but it healed much quicker, and is just a thin line now.

Our son had an aggressive form of scoliosis his spine was becoming S shaped and his rib cage was twisting round pushing his internal organs. He had an op to remove the spinal disc's in his back and fix his spine rigid with a titanium rod. He had 2 x 8 hr ops, he went in at 5feet 11inches and came out at 6 feet 3 inches (with disc's removed) he said he was glad he had it done...so were we :)
