Can I push heavy things after spinal surgery??

Question: I had spinal surgery about 6 months ago because I had scoliosis so it was a huge surgery... the doc said I can't lift anything more than 10 pounds for 6 months. I got it done beginnng of aug 2007. Its not quite 6 months yet, but almost. I got ajob at a shoe store n there's these shelves I gotta push full of shoes, there pretty heavy but I can push it, but I'm not sure if it wud harm my back? Isn't pushin different from lifting? I'm not sure how much these rolling shelves weigh but there stacked with shoes.
Answers: At six months post-op, you're cleared for many things. At one year post-op, you're cleared for just about everything. What's magical about these times? Well, you're waiting for your spine to fuse. If you don't wait long enough, you're going to be putting a huge strain on a spine that may not be ready to take it.

You're right in that pushing is different from lifting. I'd still talk to my surgeon.
instead of guessing have yourself checked by a
occupational therapist
not the smartest idea but you know your limits.
better not push anything as well. your still using the back muscles and they have to have time to repair themselves too.
I would ask your doctor because you can never trust people on this site. Someone says yes you try and boom! you screw up your back that fast!
so stick to what the doctor said to u
and its to risky to push heavy things in ur case at least give ur self a year
Don't be a moron, dude. Pushing, lifting, whatever. Don't be a moron. If it's too much, you'll know it's too much... So don't do it. Give it all the time it needs to heal or you will regret it for the rest of your life. Do what you feel you can do *comfortably* and don't do more than that until you are *completely* healed.
i wouldnt encourage it. pushing would still use your back muscles and though you may not feel any discomfort right after, constant straining could eventually lead to another spinal cord problem. please let the store know and i hope that they will assign you a different task. but if not, better get a job where you wont have to strain your back. remember, you only have one back
Ask your doc about it. Even a healthy person can get torn in the back by pushing those things with the wrong posture. I imagine the fact that you are still recovering from surgery doesn't help your case. In saying that, they probably have a company policy (or the manufacturers will) on how to operate them safely. Follow these guides to the letter.
Better not, For your safety.

This would likely be a question for a physician...so guess you think a lot of doctors are on here?
No, worst mistake you can make unless a doctor says so.
Anything that can put a strain on your back is harmful to you spine, which still may be a little traumatized by the whole procedure even 6 months after. Be it wrestling, lifting, pushing, ect.
Even if your doctor does say some lifting and pushing is okay, I'd still take precautions and take it easy until at least a year or so to be on the safe side.

Try and speak to your boss man, or whomever, and let them know of your surgery, and see if they can assign someone else to do the stuff that involves lifting and pushing.

Best of luck!

Oh and one more thing....

I suggest you join the site www.scoliosis-support.com!
It's an amazing site, I've been there for almost a year now, and they helped me through everything.
If you decide to join, tell them Taylor sent ya ;)!
It still puts a strain on your back. Think of it this way, your employer can't fire you because of a disability, and it makes your job easier. So just tell him about your surgery, and if he doesn't understand, you can sue him if he fires you. Win/win situation. Also, why risk the rest of a comfortable life for shoes?
Yes. Im sure its ok...
pushing things also require for your backbone to get some of the stress. if it's to heavy you're gonna have a bad back for life.
so see your doctor and ask him if you can continue pushing shelves
