How serious is it that my son has been diagnosed with scoliosis at 9, and is it serious that he has hip pain??
Question: Yesterday the 1st of Feb 2008 my son was diagnosed with scoliosis. For me this is heartbreaking. I took him cause he had complained about back ache, pain in the hip and tired legs. Is it very serious that he is showing these symptoms already? I am worried about him and would like to help him.
Answers: It may or may not be serious. We don't have enough information to give you a good opinion. To give you a better opinion, we'd need to know what his curve measures, is it getting worse, and if so, how quickly is it changing, is it or will it be squeezing his heart and lungs, etc.
Your son needs to have his back monitored by a scoliosis specialist (more specialized training than an orthopedic generalist). The monitoring will probably continue until he's done with his growth spurt(s).
The problem with scoliosis is that its not very predictable. It doesn't show up in the same gender, at the same age, at the same severity, affecting the same bones in the same way, increasing at the same amount during the growth spurt, etc. This is why getting a good history of his back is so important.
Yes, it is very serious that he has pain now.
I would start scheduling the surgeries to correct and repair his spine, and set up appointments with massage therapists (or study and learn masage therapy yourself!). It might be an idea to invest in a hot tub for pain management to reduce his need for constant painkillers.
It is NOT serious! Scoliosis is in nearly all child health check-ups, because they are 'looking' for it. Children like grass do not grow in equal lengths, some will grow more to the right, some will have no growth and then a spurt of two inches and so on. Therefore they have picked up Scoliosis but you do not state the degree of curvature? Serious Scoliosis has a degree of curvature, as it can place pressure on hips, knees and organs. However at 9 years of age, the Docs will monitor him to see if he grows out of the scoliosis as he continues to grow and this can happen. Therefore try not to panic, if the Scoliosis was 'serious' they would already be preparing him for a hard back brace to wear everyday without fail. As you have not mentioned this, it would seem they are thinking along the lines of a growth spurt. Good Luck and be prepared to be buying new trousers every month as he has these growth spurts.
Have a special needs child here the same age with 100 degree curve so her chin is 'sitting' on her hip. She is bowed forward cannot sit up, cannot go to school. However they are waiting for her to finish the growing before they start to straighten the spine through surgery.
I am not a doctor, but I think it is a good thing that he has been diagnosed at such an early age. There are treatments that he will benefit from. My nine year old son was diagnosed with a slight scoliosis or curvature of the spine. He was developing a limp. He went through a massage and yoga type therapy, where they taught him exercises to do at home, for about 9 months and the limp is gone. I hope everything works out okay for you.
Well, scoliosis or not, any back pain with teens or juveniles are signs of serious condition. Scoliosis may be a contributing factor, it may not. We can only speculate here without seeing the radiologic studies and more history...
Studies showed that scoliosis patients seem to develop early degeneration as early has early teen years..due to increased stress from abnormal biomechanics...
In most cases, scoliosis is not painful in milder stage...But during aggressive progressive stage it can be painful..
Supportive braces like Spinecor which is barely noticeable can be used in youngsters like your son...it has very good outcome rate.. check it out here .. http://myscoliosis.net
